Anthony Law Files 1983 Lawsuit on Behalf of Greenville Librarian

Jay Anthony, along with co-counsel Steve Buckingham, filed a lawsuit against the Greenville County Library System on behalf of librarian Jonathan Newton, who was fired in the wake of the Drag Queen Story Hour, which took place at the Five Forks branch.  Mr. Newton, as manager of the Five Forks branch, worked with local law enforcement to ensure that the event was conducted safely.  He was subsequently fired by the Director of the GCLS, who had chosen not to attend the event.  The lawsuit asserts claims under Section 1983, wrongful termination, and defamation.  For his actions, Mr. Newton was recognized with the South Carolina Library Association Intellectual Freedom Award and with the American Library Association Gordon M. Conable Award.
